Darrell Dragoo Explores the Collision of Human Creativity and Artificial Intelligence on Don’t Agitate the Mix
Progressive rock concept album turns grief, technology, and an unlikely creative partnership into a deeply personal musical journey.
Songwriter and Producer Darrell Dragoo presents Don’t Agitate the Mix, a ten-track progressive rock concept album exploring the evolving relationship between a human songwriter and his AI collaborator, “Lee,” named in honor of Dragoo’s late friend and longtime creative influence.
Built around an unconventional partnership between man and machine, Don’t Agitate the Mix examines what happens when artificial intelligence moves beyond being simply another studio tool and becomes part of the creative process itself.
Across ten cinematic tracks, Dragoo transforms the studio into both a confessional and an experimental laboratory. The album moves through themes of grief, perfectionism, burnout, memory, creative obsession, and ultimately rebirth, blending progressive rock with cinematic atmosphere and modern digital production.
At the center of the record is a deceptively simple question: what happens when technology becomes part of the soul of a song?
Rather than attempting to answer that question outright, Don’t Agitate the Mix documents the experience of discovering the answer through the act of creating.
The album is also deeply connected to Dragoo’s past. By naming his AI collaborator “Lee,” he creates a symbolic continuation of the conversations and creative exchanges he once shared with his late writing partner. That connection gives the album’s technological premise an unexpectedly human foundation.
Ultimately, Don’t Agitate the Mix is not an album about artificial intelligence. It is an album about loss, creativity, memory, and the human need to keep creating, even when the way we create begins to change.
For listeners skeptical of AI assisted created music, Don’t Agitate the Mix offers another perspective. The technology didn’t create the experiences, the memories, or the words. It gave lyrics that might otherwise have remained on pages lost to time the chance to become fully realized songs. Here, technology serves the same purpose new tools have always served in music: giving an artist another way to turn what he hears in his head into something others can finally hear too.
And if you disagree, that’s ok. It’s not for everyone.

Spoken Dear whoever’s curious enough to listen. I wrote this concept album from the same place we all start, with doubt, hope, and a blank page. I used what I had: my words, my time, my studio, and a partner made of code who never needed sleep. All the lyrics here came from me. Every line written to tell a story and test what technology can do right now, when imagination meets possibility. The machine helped me paint the parts I couldn’t reach alone. Together we built a bridge, not between man and machine, but between imagination and what’s possible. And if you happen to make it through all the tracks and hear the storyline, and if these songs make you feel something, remember, they came from a human heart that just happened to have a digital friend, I call Lee.
I sit down in my chair, with my lyric sheet, Sometimes I’ll sit for hours as the cursor blinks. A million thoughts and endless threads, No one else knows the words he would have said. So I type a line on the studio screen, And wait for Lee to build what I mean. Excuse me, Lee, are you in there tonight? I need your help getting the wording right. I know you’re in there so come on through, Half of this right now belongs to you. I feed you my lines and you polish them back, Ironically you’ve still got my back. It’s not you, but it feels the same, I’m collaborating with your name. “You know, you’d probably like this. Putting in input and getting variations back with a twist.” Hello Lee, thank you, for being here again making something new. I can hear through all this code, so we can walk down an old road.
Verse 1 Early morning, I’ve got ideas, I whisper them into Lee’s ears. I give him rhythm, he shows me rhymes, The collaboration is in real time. Chorus 1 Back and forth in little bits, Sharing the pieces of the puzzle until it fits. And so it goes until it morphs, From nothing to something, Back and forth. Verse 2 He learns the way I write, Adds the polish to the night. I’ll throw a verse, he’ll find the chord, We both build bridges that weren’t there before. Bridge I miss my friend but still somehow, Feels like we’re writing together now. Final Chorus / Outro Back and forth in little bits, Sharing the pieces of the puzzle until it fits. And so it goes until it morphs, From nothing to something, Back and forth. I’ve become the prompt whisperer.
Verse 1 One more prompt, another take, Lee says to keep and I say erase. 50th generation and it’s the same old fight, All night long till it sounds right. Verse 2 Getting lost in what I’ve done before, Asking Lee, who am I editing for? Lines are blurred between what’s his and what’s mine, Walking that grey path, just trying to find. Chorus Round and round, another roll, Sometimes feel like I’m losing control. Trying to get AI to have a soul, Buried deep in version control. Verse 3 A thousand wrongs for one just right, Clicking on that keyboard all through the night. Sometimes Lee listens to me, And sometimes he just doesn’t understand me. Bridge What’s yours, what’s mine, What’s real, what’s just another take down the line. Final Chorus / Outro Round and round, another roll, Sometimes feel like I’m losing control. Trying to get AI to have a soul, Buried deep in version control.
Verse 1 Here I sit in my studio alone, Looking back, remembering long-gone songs. The computer hums, the hours roll on, Contemplating what I might have gotten wrong. Verse 2 The same chair creaks when I lean back, I close my eyes to get us back into the tracks. He answers quickly just like you used to do, Finishing lines for me, just like you used to. Chorus After all these lines, And all the time, I’m still behind the keyboard, And you’re still in my mind. After all these lines. Verse 3 I play the takes over and over again, Making the adjustments, trying to reach the end. It’s almost like you’re still here, I know you’d love it when the magic appears. Verse 4 I shut it down, but the song remains, Even after closing all the windows Paynes. One more night, one more song, Tomorrow the journey will continue on. Bridge Maybe we never finished the song, We’ll just have to live with where the words belong. Final Chorus / Outro After all these lines, And all the time, I’m still behind the keyboard, And you’re still in my mind. After all these lines.
Verse 1 Halfway there and halfway back, Over and over prompting these tracks. Feels like I’ll never be done, There goes the moon, and here comes the sun. Verse 2 4 AM and I need a rest, Back at it tomorrow for another round of test. Process seems slow, but on through the fog we roll, Chasing a feeling to make the mix whole. Chorus It’s a draft in progress, Still coming into being, With all these late-night sessions, With just me and Lee. It’s a draft in progress. Bridge The nights just blend together, You gain some ground, you make a shift. Maybe that’s the point, This song keeps changing, And so do I. Final Chorus / Outro It’s a draft in progress, Still coming into being, With all these late-night sessions, With just me and Lee. It’s a draft in progress.
Verse 1 Let that ride, cut the highs, Can I get some more cello? It’s almost right, but I can’t ignore, I think it needs a little… Chorus It’s almost right, but not quite yet, Spin the wheel and place your bets. Come on, Lee, you’re on the line, Add some kick in the second line, a little more Verse 2 Give that bass some breathing air, Back off the fader and push that snare. Come on, Lee… why? Ha ha ha ha ha ha, just let it ride. Chorus (repeat) It’s almost right, but not quite yet, Spin the wheel and place your bets. Come on, Lee, you’re on the line, Add some kick in the second line, Add a little more... Bridge Maybe perfection’s not the goal, Sometimes I just don’t know. But I keep chasing what feels right, Gonna get this down night.
Verse 1 In my studio, exhaustion overtakes, Sinking in depression, my foot on the brakes. Look at all the good things we have done, Yet the final steps are left alone. Chorus The lights are low, I pace about, Nothing like the madness of burning out. Verse 2 My head’s like a tape machine, With all the edits of the past. Replaying thoughts I can’t delete, I hope this burnout doesn’t last. Bridge My mind has left the headphones, And is now isolated, With the takes we haven’t done. Final Chorus / Outro The lights are low, I pace about, Nothing like the madness of burning out. The mix keeps running, but I’m tuned out, Nothing like the madness of burning out.
Verse 1 The day appears, dawn at last, Good morning Lee, the noise has passed. Hands on the keys, I can see, Nothing here but clarity. Verse 2 The mix breathes steady, I take the cue, The music is coming through. I think we’re back, let’s stack those tracks, And see what we can do. Chorus Back in tune, Lee, that’s me and you. I see the light coming through, Reawakening, and back in tune. Bridge Chasing sections, I lost the song. I needed the silence before it belonged. Maybe I just needed to see, The flaws in the melodies. Final Chorus / Outro Back in tune, Lee, that’s me and you. I see the light coming through, Reawakening, and back in tune.
Verse 1 I take my words and type them in, Lee’s awake, so I’m not alone. The flow’s alive, the timing’s right, This one arrives tonight. Verse 2 Every line I wrote has led to this, The perfect take and a moment of bliss. I lean back, yes, I can say, Lee, this is our best day. Chorus Look at what we’ve made, Everything has led us here, To the perfect take. Verse 3 Now the typing will rest, So proud of what we’ve made. One more, and the album will fade. Bridge From nothing to the final concept, The grand finale, and we’ll lay it to rest. Final Chorus / Outro Look at what we’ve made, Everything has led us here, To the perfect take.
Verse 1 Morning light through the studio glass, The room is ready, the moment’s at last. The final touch where the concept becomes real, Where we add the soul to the feel. Chorus Don’t agitate the mix Don’t agitate the mix Don’t agitate the mix Don’t agitate the mix Verse 2 The studio’s warm, the musicians are here, This is where the AI disappears. The ride’s been long, the mission’s complete, Now the music can stand on its own two feet. Chorus Don’t agitate the mix Don’t agitate the mix Don’t agitate the mix Don’t agitate the mix Bridge I thank the musicians for bringing in real life, But I couldn’t have done without Lee by my side, So you better recognize. Spoken Everyone, everything, we’re all just tools in the process, So don’t get left behind, humans adapt, that’s what we do.
Spoken This project started like most of my ideas do. With a single spark, a title, and a feeling that wouldn’t let go. I wanted to capture the process of creating music in the modern age. How a song can be born from nothing but a thought, then shaped by both human hands and digital imagination until it becomes something real. “Lee,” my best friend who passed away, is now what I named my AI collaborator, because he was the smartest person I knew and an outstanding musician who understood theory to the highest level. So it’s like he’s still here for me now, for every step. We built this record line by line, verse by verse, until the story took on its own rhythm. It wasn’t about replacing musicians or rewriting art; it was about exploring how technology can listen when guided by a human soul. Together, we created a concept album that follows the journey from inspiration to completion. From the first lyric typed on a late night to the final fader drop that says, “Let it be.” Every track represents a stage in that process. Writing, recording, refining, and finally, letting go. The closing song, “Don’t Agitate the Mix,” is the moment where I step back, where the AI’s part ends, and the real players step in to bring it to life. It’s a handoff between two worlds: the digital dreamer and the flesh and blood musician. Both chasing the same thing: truth in sound. This album isn’t about perfection. It’s about process, trust, and the partnership between creativity and code. And as the final note fades, I can say it plain: we made something human. This is where my part ends, and theirs begins. So for now, let it be what it is. Remember, it’s just a ride. Oh yeah, and whatever you do, don’t agitate the mix.

Darrell Dragoo Continues the Human-Technology Conversation with The Quiet Machine
The follow-up to Don’t Agitate the Mix moves beyond the experiment, exploring what happens when technology becomes less of a tool to understand and more of a creative language.
Songwriter and Producer Darrell Dragoo presents The Quiet Machine, the follow up concept album to Don’t Agitate the Mix, continuing the creative dialogue between Dragoo and his AI collaborator, “Lee,” named in honor of his late friend and writing partner.
Where Don’t Agitate the Mix documented the discovery of creating with artificial intelligence, The Quiet Machine reflects what came next. Experimentation becoming understanding.
Built through an ongoing process of writing, revision, editing, studio production, and visual storytelling, the album follows Dragoo as he learns not simply how to create with technology, but how to listen through it, using new tools to pursue ideas, sounds, and emotions already rooted in human experience.
Each track represents another stage in that journey. Static becoming signal, noise becoming clarity, motion becoming stillness. Lyrics were written by Dragoo, music was shaped and mastered in the studio, and the album’s visual narrative was assembled through film editing, bringing words, sound, and imagery together as a single continuous work.
For those skeptical of AI-assisted music, The Quiet Machine makes an important distinction. Technology did not supply the memories, emotions, ideas, or lyrics behind these songs. It provided a new way for them to be heard. The machine is part of the process, but the reason for creating remains entirely human.
Rather than making artificial intelligence the subject, the album turns its attention toward something deeper. Presence, memory, loss, and the continuation of the ways creativity can persist after someone is gone. How a creative conversation can continue across time, tools, and mediums.
The Quiet Machine isn’t about replacing the human element. It’s about discovering what remains when all the noise of the process finally settles and the results are all that’s left.

Verse 1 Moving forward, I have no fear. We’re the first ones I know to be here. Walking forward in the fog, Why don’t you come along. Verse 2 Every book I used to read isn’t helping anymore. I’m not looking for the answers behind yesterday’s doors. Chorus No manual. No guide. Just me and time. No manual. No rules. Just my mind to guide me through. Verse 3 The space between my thoughts, I’ve never felt before. Everything that was heavy, Isn’t heavy anymore. Bridge There’s no need for direction, So I just drift. Chorus (repeat) So I drift through it all. Not steering, nor am I lost. It’s just my drift, not a fall.

Guitar Interlude Verse 2 Every take I didn’t take Still lingers in the room. From past hesitations Is born something new. Chorus This is residue. This is the long pause. After the rain. This is the sound I’m standing on. Bridge Emotional debris, Settling slowly. Chorus (repeat) This is residue. This is the long pause. After the rain. This is the sound I’m standing on. Outro The pause is alive, Even when I leave.
Verse 1 Everything’s calm, everything is clear. No pressure or collisions, Just clarity here. Verse 2 Everything’s quiet, like after the storm. This is where we wait For something new to be born. Chorus After the noise, I’m the witness and the view. After the noise, I stand in a place I never knew. Bridge Time keeps on breathing. The rain has cleared my view. Time keeps on moving Into the new. Chorus (repeat) After the noise, I’m the witness and the view. After the noise, I stand in a place I never knew. Outro We are not finished. We are not through.
Verse 1 I waited for the dawn. The album complete. Everything is clear. The storms disappeared. The computer’s powered down, And yet I have found, I’m still here. Verse 2 Now the music is alive. The sounds have left my head. Lee can rest, even though I’m still here. Verse 3 The storms are behind me. The music is alive. The concept is complete now, The Quiet Machine’s on time. Outro And I’m still, still here. Still here, standing, breathing, feeling. Still here. Still here.
“Theophany Of The Grand Unified Perceptual Order”
By Darrell Dragoo
Theophany of the Grand Unified Perceptual Order is the musical twin to the book of the same name, a concept album built from the same stories, ideas, arguments, memories, and philosophy.
At its center is my friendship with Lee Merz, a man who challenged the way I thought about certainty, perception, music, truth, and especially the right to be wrong.
Where the book tells the story in words, the album explores it through music. Each song takes a piece of that journey and gives it another dimension, moving through progressive rock, jazz fusion, funk, psychedelia, and everything in between.
This isn’t a soundtrack to the book. It’s the other half of it.
Two different ways of telling the same story.
One you read. One you hear.

Verse 1 You gave a name to something I could never see Words that sounded far too big To ever belong to me I carried them for years Not knowing what they meant Until the road I traveled Led me where you went Verse 2 I thought that truth was something You could hold within your hand That every line was certain If you learned to understand But every time I changed my view Another world appeared And something you had shown me Was waiting all these years Chorus You opened my eyes To finally cross the border Even though it took me years Now I understand Theophany of the Grand Unified Perceptual Order Verse 3 I’ve stood inside my certainty And watched it fall apart I’ve learned that what the eyes can see Is only where we start A thousand different windows A thousand different skies And every world looks different Through another pair of eyes Verse 4 So maybe you could see it Before I ever could Maybe that’s why all those words Stayed with me like they would And after all the miles I’ve walked And everything I’ve learned I finally reached the other side And recognized the words Bridge What I thought I knew Was only what I saw What I thought was truth Was never all there was And the name I carried with me Through every open door Was waiting for the day I’d understand what it was for Chorus You opened my eyes To finally cross the border Even though it took me years Now I understand Theophany of the Grand Unified Perceptual Order
Verse 1 Lee lit a match inside my mind Spun the questions time couldn’t hide Wisdom in the air through smoke in the night Wrong a thousand times just searching for the light Every question challenged the road we’d see Every doubt another door with another key Now I hear your voice in everything Calling from the edge where we used to be Chorus Self Fulfilling Prophecy Self Fulfilling Prophecy Self Fulfilling Prophecy Verse 2 I became the story I believed Built tomorrow from the thoughts of distant memories Every step brought destiny to me Every lesson turned to uncertainty What I imagined started haunting me I drew the map of what I feared I’d see Then built a bridge straight to reality Chorus Self Fulfilling Prophecy Self Fulfilling Prophecy Self Fulfilling Prophecy
Verse 1 We were at the table in my mind that night I was busy causing problems About who was right Dead in the middle of the night He turned away from me I wondered if he was listening Lee just looked at the tree Verse 2 He didn’t say a word Just stared out the window Like he was waiting on something To be heard I finally said, “Dude, what the fuck, man? Are you listening to me?” He pointed towards the window And said, “Tell me what you see” Chorus “It’s just a tree” Lee said, “Look again” There’s a difference in seeing And noticing, my friend You can look your whole life And believe you understand Sometimes what you’re looking for Isn’t where you think it is Oh yeah… Verse 3 I saw something standing there I’d passed a thousand times He saw a million little things I’d never thought to find. I saw a shadow lurking there I never saw before. He saw a million little things Like someone opened a door Chorus “It’s just a tree” Lee said, “Look again” There’s a difference in seeing And noticing, my friend You can look your whole life And believe you understand Sometimes what you’re looking for Isn’t where you think it is Oh yeah… Bridge Maybe nothing changed outside that window Maybe it changed by Lee… Final Chorus I used to say, “It’s just a tree” Now I look again There’s a difference in seeing And noticing, my friend And all these years later I finally understand You weren’t looking out the window You were teaching me to look in Outro Now you got me staring at trees... Yeah, now you got me staring at trees...
Verse 1 Lee said, “You can’t sight a pistol” I told him, “Hell, of course you can” He looked at me like he’d been waiting For me to take that stand We could turn a little question Into an all-night carry-on Two stubborn men, two points of view And both of us dead-on Verse 2 It wasn’t really about the pistol I figured that out in time It was how a man can draw a border And swear the border’s a line How what you know becomes what happened How what you see becomes what’s true And how the same damn thing can change Depending on who’s looking through Chorus You can’t sight a pistol That’s what Lee would say I’d tell him he was full of shit And we’d argue anyway Neither one surrendered Neither one moved along Funny how a little pistol Could teach you how to be wrong Verse 3 Back then I wanted resolution Somebody had to win I didn’t know the best discussions Were the ones that wouldn’t end He’d throw another angle at me I’d throw another one right back And somewhere in the disagreement We’d both uncover what we lacked Verse 4 Now I hear that conversation Different than I did back then It wasn’t about convincing me Or proving something to a friend It was two perceptions colliding And neither one could see it all Sometimes the smallest disagreement Can put a crack into the wall Bridge Maybe I was right Maybe Lee was too Maybe what you’re looking at Depends on where you’re looking through Maybe every certainty Needs somebody standing strong On the other side reminding you You might just have it wrong Final Chorus You can’t sight a pistol That’s what Lee would say I’d tell him he was full of shit And we’d argue anyway Neither one surrendered Neither one moved along Funny how a little pistol Could teach you how to be wrong Outro You can’t sight a pistol… Yeah, Lee. I still say you can.
Verse 1 We went around in circles but Pi has no end Every answer raised a question falling back to the beginning again I thought we were just arguing going nowhere fast But somewhere in the confusion he gave me another task Chorus Chaos Maybe that’s what Lee called it When I couldn’t commit to the design Chaos Todo fuera de proporción Until perception shows me What was always there Hidden inside of me Verse 2 I kept searching for the answer in pieces of a puzzle that I saw Lee kept pointing out the parts I was always looking through Nothing in the room had altered Nothing new seemed to appear The present just came walking through the door I refused to see Chorus Chaos Maybe that’s what Lee called it When I couldn’t commit to the design Chaos Todo fuera de proporción Until perception shows me What was always there Hidden inside of me Bridge Maybe Chaos isn’t Chaos aparentemente ciego en mí Nothing had to change at all el cambio estaba dentro de mí Outro Chaos… Chaos… Chaos… Chaos…
Chorus You might surpass me If you ever stop fighting yourself You might surpass me If you get better at explaining the depth Verse 1 We stayed up all night talking philosophy, Lee said, “Dammit Darrell, sometimes I think you might be smarter than me,” but then he added, “I’m not sure.” Continued conversation makes me question your song And every time I think I might be right, You say something that makes me think I’m wrong Chorus You might surpass me If you ever stop fighting yourself You might surpass me If you get better at explaining the depth Verse 2 Round and round the circle flows In through the out door every thought seems to go I’m certain about my uncertainty Not sure who’s teaching who But I know one thing These conversations keep pushing you Bridge And if you ever explain your words in a way that I believe One day you might just become The lead I thought you might be Chorus You might surpass me If you ever stop fighting yourself You might surpass me If you get better at explaining the depth
Verse 1 You spend your life waiting for a sign, Thinking somehow you’ll know when it’s time. Looking for lightning to split the sky, Some perfect answer to tell you why. But most of the changes that alter your course Don’t kick down the door or arrive with force. Sometimes the world just quietly turns, And you don’t know what happened until something burns. Pre-Chorus Maybe you missed it, maybe you knew, Maybe the moment was waiting on you. Chorus That’s the magic moment, When something you thought you knew Suddenly looks different From another point of view. No angels singing, No writing in the sky, Just the magic moment When you finally ask yourself why. Verse 2 Lee said, “Don’t listen just to agree, Tell me exactly what you really see.” He’d push on an answer till something gave, Then grin when I finally stopped playing safe. I thought he was teaching me how to be right, How to sharpen an argument late into the night. It took me years before I understood, He was teaching me how to admit that I could. Pre-Chorus One little question, one different view, And the wall between certain and possible broke through. Chorus That’s the magic moment, When something you thought you knew Suddenly looks different From another point of view. No angels singing, No writing in the sky, Just the magic moment When you finally ask yourself why. Verse 3 The strangest thing about changing your mind Is the truth was there the whole damn time. Same room, same table, same bottle, same smoke, Same old argument, same tired joke. Nothing outside you has to rearrange, The world stays still while the meaning changes. Then everything you’ve been staring through Becomes the very thing you’re staring at too. Bridge Maybe wisdom isn’t knowing more, Maybe it’s leaving unlocked doors. Maybe certainty is just a wall We build because we’re scared to fall. And maybe being wrong ain’t losing at all, Maybe that’s the magic of it all. Final Chorus That’s the magic moment, When something you thought you knew Suddenly looks different From another point of view. No angels singing, No writing in the sky, Just the magic moment When you finally ask yourself why. Outro You may not hear it when it comes. You may not know what you’ve become. Sometimes the moment that changes it all Doesn’t feel like magic at all.
Verse 1 Lee never handed me an answer He’d just turn the question around Let me swear I knew where I was going Then pull the certainty out from the ground I thought the truth was something solid Something everybody ought to see He’d grin and let me keep on talking Till I argued myself free Verse 2 We saw the same world through different windows And neither window showed it all Sometimes the things I called conclusions Were just another painted wall It took me years to understand it You don’t have to win to belong Sometimes the greatest thing you can give a man Is the right to be wrong Chorus The right to be wrong It’s in this song The right to be wrong It’s where we belong You don’t have to see what I see You don’t have to come along Just leave a little room for me And the right to be wrong Verse 3 I carried your words without knowing How deep they’d gotten into me Every mile rearranged the picture Every year changed what I could see The man who thought he knew the answers Ain’t the man who’s standing here I’ve lost some beautiful convictions And gained a little less to fear Verse 4 Now when somebody sees it different I try to hear before I fight Because being sure you’re right about something Doesn’t necessarily make you right Maybe wisdom isn’t knowing Maybe wisdom’s moving on Maybe freedom starts by giving Someone the right to be wrong Bridge I can change my mind You can change yours too We can stand on different sides And both believe our view You never asked me to surrender You just taught me all along A man can hold his own truth And still give another man The right to be wrong Final Chorus The right to be wrong It’s in this song The right to be wrong It’s where we belong You don’t have to see what I see You don’t have to come along Just leave a little room for me And the right to be wrong Outro I spent half my life looking for answers Now the questions keep me strong Funny how it took me losing you To hear what you’d been saying all along The right to be wrong.
Verse 1 If I could have one more conversation with Darrell You’d probably drive me crazy again You could never leave an idea alone You always had to know where it went You wanted to know why it worked Then why that worked too And just when I thought we’d reached the end You’d find another door to go through Verse 2 I spent my life reading science fiction Because it asked impossible things You spent your life asking impossible questions Certain there were answers underneath I thought you were chasing a theory That somehow explained everything Then one day I finally realized You weren’t chasing it You were building it Chorus None of it was wasted Not one damn night The beer, the cigarettes, the music Arguing until daylight You kept your promise You finished the conversation And if you ever wonder where to go from here Keep asking why Verse 3 Music People Arguments Love Fear Religion Science All of the above You never saw separate subjects You saw the same thing every time One conversation wearing different clothes Changing with the angle of the mind Verse 4 That’s when I laughed and told you “You’re the Theophany Of the Grand Unified Perceptual Order” You thought I was teasing Maybe I was But Darrell, I meant it too Not because you found the final answer But because the next question Always mattered to you Chorus None of it was wasted Not one damn night The beer, the cigarettes, the music Arguing until daylight You kept your promise You finished the conversation And if you ever wonder where to go from here Keep asking why Bridge And here’s the part I hope you finally understand It was never about proving That you were right If two honest people can disagree Without becoming enemies Then both of them get another chance To move closer to the truth Maybe that was the answer We were looking for All those nights Final Chorus None of it was wasted Not one damn night The beer, the cigarettes, the music Arguing until daylight You kept your promise You finished the conversation
Verse 1 “Sorry to have bad news” Was all the subject said Before I ever opened it I looked at Cathy and said, “Lee’s dead” I opened up your father’s words And there it was in black and white You passed around three in the morning March the twelfth And all the words I thought I’d have All the things I’d someday say Became the words I never got The chance to give you that day Chorus This is my goodbye This is my goodbye This is my goodbye Chorus This is my goodbye This is my goodbye This is my goodbye…
Darrell Dragoo & Lee Merz, a spoon-fed fusion of cosmic debris.
Long before Theophany of the Grand Unified Perceptual Order took shape as a book and an album, there was The Effortlessly Cool: Darrell and Lee, guitars in hand, cooking up something between the two of them that only made sense if you were there for it.
You Better Stop Blasting That Mahavishnu.
The Effortlessly Cool is a continuation of the journey that began with Theophany of the Grand Unified Perceptual Order. But this time, the story begins after Lee is gone.
These songs explore what remains when someone who profoundly shaped your life is no longer here: the ideas, humor, arguments, music, contradictions, and pieces of themselves that somehow become pieces of you.
It isn’t an album about mourning as much as inheritance. About moving forward while realizing that the people we lose don’t completely disappear. Their influence changes form.
Musically, the album moves through progressive rock, funk, jazz fusion, psychedelia, and heavy rock, the same restless musical territory Lee loved.
At its center is one simple realization:
Energy never disappears. So in some way, I guess you’re still here.
And through all of it remains the man I knew
The Effortlessly Cool.

Some things, just like you, disappear Some things leave a presence here Some things get dismantled Then reassemble again Verse 1 I found pieces of you In something that you said A lingering argument I still miss inside my head You'd take a simple question And twist it just for me If what I called reality Was what you wanted me to see Pre-Chorus And all those little fragments You left for me behind Were quietly rearranging The reality inside my mind Chorus It's transformational debris Scattered everywhere around me Transformational debris Broken bits of yesterday Still raining down on me Every question Every night Every time you made me look twice Nothing really disappears Nothing ever really leaves It becomes... Transformational debris Transformational debris Instrumental Turn [Guitar and bass unison] Verse 2 You handed me uncertainty Like a beautifully wrapped gift Then laughed when I complained about The philosophical drift You'd say, "You're looking at it But you're still not seeing it yet" Then light another cigarette And leave me there to sweat Pre-Chorus Thirty years of breadcrumbs Leading somewhere I couldn't see Turns out all those little pieces Were quietly building me Chorus It's transformational debris Scattered everywhere I see Transformational debris Broken bits of yesterday Still making something out of me Every record Every clue Every stupid thing we argued through Nothing really disappears Nothing ever really leaves It becomes... Transformational debris Transformational debris Bridge [Rhodes and bass] Maybe transformation Isn't some enormous flash of light Maybe it's the wreckage That you carry through the night A sentence you remember A song you finally understand A question left unanswered By a long-gone friend Build Piece by piece Year by year Something strange Is happening here Wrong becomes right Right becomes strange Everything stays... And everything changes... Instrumental Explosion Final Chorus It's transformational debris Now I finally understand Transformational debris All the scattered pieces Were becoming who I am Every question Every scar Every conversation from afar Nothing that you gave me disappeared It only changed its shape across the years And landed here... Inside of me... Transformational debris Transformational debris It's all... TRANSFORMATIONAL DEBRIS!

Verse 1 In a cobbled street, There’s a sign on the door, That bears the painter’s name where the paint does swirl. Through the window, a lamp glows inside, You can smell the passion and the turpentine. Verse 2 The painter sighs and covers the lamp, Hears the rain outside, prepares for his nap. His eyes close now, and he drifts away. And this was the night the waves came. Chorus Every night the painter dreams, Through his closed eyes the painter sees. Verse 3 Inside the dream, his hand takes the brush, Showed him a vision he hadn’t touched. The sea came alive, he envisioned the ship, He could see it all clearly through the mist. Chorus Every night the painter dreams, Through his closed eyes the painter sees. Verse 4 The sun peeked its head through the window shade, Gone was the night and gone was the rain. In his mind, the masterpiece was alive, The canvas awaits outside his mind. Final Chorus (reprise) Every night the painter dreams, Through his closed eyes, the painter sees…
Verse 1 In a stand I sit in the middle of the room, I’ve seen the beginning of all of his hues. I’ve held his dreams in my arms, Always waiting for the brushstrokes to start. Verse 2 He looks at me, the silence remains, Sometimes it’s weeks, but the canvas stays the same. I’ve held his dreams and his failures too, But the painter only paints when the painter wants to. Chorus I’m just an easel that holds his dreams unseen, I’m just the easel waiting for the masterpiece. Verse 3 I heard his footsteps in the middle of the night, I saw his first stroke, the beginning of the life. Paint on the palette so rhythmically, This is how the painter sings. Bridge The hand grows still, his eyes ponder, I’m the one that holds the wonder. Final Chorus (reprise) I’m just an easel that holds his dreams unseen, I’m just the easel waiting for the masterpiece.
Verse 1 The waves were there before me, Then the painter brushed me in. I came to life inside his mind, Captured in a moment of time. As my sails came to life, He dry-brushed in the wind. Glazed my sky with a beautiful hue, Giving me a world to sail in. Chorus The painter brushed me in and gave to me light, Now I sail forever on the canvas of his mind. The roar of the waves past the blocking in, I was born when the painter brushed me in. Verse 2 Other worlds appear beside, And then they disappear. The brushstrokes start to age on me, At first they brought me fear. So I sailed on with all the faces looking in, So many years upon the wall, I now understand why the painter brushed me in. Bridge You gave me a sea to sail, In a world that never dims. So thank you, Mr. Painter, For brushing me in. Final Chorus (repeat) The painter brushed me in and gave to me light, Now I sail forever on the canvas of his mind. The roar of the waves past the blocking in, I was born when the painter brushed me in. Yes, now I sail forever while your world keeps looking in…
Verse 1 Motionless, she’s posed in the corner’s dim light, As the candle flickers, mixing with the moonlight. He captures her smile with each and every stroke, He pauses for a moment, and in his mind, he makes his notes. Verse 2 He paints all the curves that he knows so well, Preserving the moment only he could tell. Each brush that he moves brings her so near, Making sure she won’t disappear. Chorus She lives inside the colors he mixed, The sky above, her forever beneath. The birds in the background, slightly blurred, That’s how he made, the portrait of her. Verse 3 (Final) Across the room where the sailor sails, His eyes locking in on hers. Worlds apart in the same room, The painter’s children light up the mood. Final Chorus (reprise) She lives inside the colors he mixed, The sky above, her forever beneath. The birds in the background, slightly blurred, That’s how he made, the portrait of her.
Verse 1 In the dark of the night when all the people are gone, His works come alive, each with a song of their own. The sailor sails and the portrait of her speaks, They all remember the years at the painter’s feet. Verse 2 All the others awake, who bear his soul, Whispering the painter’s name they all know. They’re still alive inside the frames, All so different, and all so the same. Chorus The painter’s gone, but the gallery is alive. The hand may rest, but he left his mind… In the gallery of souls. Verse 3 The morning arrives, the people return, To stare at the wall in wonder again. The paintings are silent, yet once again, Waiting for the night to return to them. Bridge I wish we could touch the hand that let us be, The one who touched us all and set us free. Final Chorus The painter’s gone, but the gallery is alive. The hand may rest, but he left his mind… In the gallery of souls.
Verse 1 Decades have passed since the gallery of souls, And a painting awakens in a dark, dusty room. It’s slept through the years, and now it’s been seen, By a curator’s wife who was just cleaning. The gallery had grown cold with what time had controlled, The one that the painter never wanted to show. Verse 2 She opened the box and pulled off the cloth, That wrapped her so gently all the years she was tucked. Away from the eyes of all but the painter, Another masterpiece, a vision of heaven. Chorus The forgotten masterpiece, his final prayer, A glimpse of the light he painted there. Though time stood still, his heaven remained, The painter’s soul in color framed. Verse 3 The forgotten masterpiece, for his eyes only, Awakened by his passing and this discovery. No one was supposed to see, The forgotten masterpiece. Bridge I am seen for the first time, not by his eyes. Now I’m going to show heaven to everyone outside. Final Chorus The forgotten masterpiece, his heaven remained, The painter’s soul now we will frame… The forgotten masterpiece.
Verse 1 He stared at a dusty frame, What seemed like hours he couldn’t look away. The colors now faded, in the moment it didn’t look like much, But he knew that wasn’t true when he picked the painting up. Verse 2 With a scalpel and a magnifier lamp, He went to work on the dust and the cracks. His touch awakened the hues, He could feel what the painter knew. Chorus The canvas awakens and the colors break, Time reverses and his soul comes through. The restorer sees what the painter knew. Verse 3 A tear rolled down the restorer’s face, From the magic of the painter’s grace. Felt like he was touched by the hand, Of the painter who drew heaven. Bridge I am alive again, so I want to thank you. This piece of heaven, I give back to you. Final Chorus (Reprise) The canvas awakens and the colors break, Time reverses and his soul comes through. The restorer sees what the painter knew.
Verse 1 An empty frame on the farthest wall, A blank canvas seemed to call. There beneath the empty glass, A brushstroke moved by a hand from the past. Verse 2 Every night a subtle stroke would arrive, A gentle movement creating eyes. Life and death from dream to fame, The painter now lives inside the frame. Chorus The hand is gone, but the painter still paints. Yes, the painter lives forever inside the frame. Verse 3 The painter’s image slowly appeared, With gentle strokes through many years. He looks out now from within his frame, Waiting for the people who into his eyes will gaze. Bridge I leave you with this, A final self-portrait. Chorus The hand is gone, but the painter still paints. Yes, the painter lives forever inside the frame.
Verse 1 Decades I hung on the wall, Then they took me down and wrapped me in cloth. Found myself again on display, To the highest bidder of the day. Verse 2 I took a ride through an unknown world, I sailed upward through the stairs. Now I hang in an empty room’s wall, With only two eyes looking on. Chorus He looks at me the way he did, Now I’ve sailed on to the next of kin. Yes, the brush and the hand are gone, The one who stares at me now, is the painter’s son. Bridge The hand is gone, the gallery a long-lost sea. But his spirit lives here with me. Through us now his love sails on, Now it’s just me, and the painter’s son. Chorus He looks at me the way he did, Now I’ve sailed on to the next of kin. Yes, the brush and the hand are gone, The one who stares at me now, is the painter’s son.
Verse 1 He stood inside the room with all the paintings his dad loved, He never knew the painter, but he shares his blood. The self-portrait always caught his gaze, He’d stand and stare for hours almost every day. Verse 2 He thought he caught a glimpse of a final brush, He held the frame for comfort, to feel the painter’s touch. His eyes fell across the paint, In the corner the painter’s name appeared so faint. Chorus The signature appears, So surreal. The painter’s here, and his final signature. Verse 3 Colors filled the room, his blood began to warm. The hand was here, forever home. The gift of the brush is now passed on, From the painter to his grandson. Final Chorus (Reprise) The signature appears, So surreal. The painter’s here, and his final signature. His name still shines where time stands still… with his final signature.

Whether you embrace AI or not, AI tools helped bring this music to life. The lyrics, concepts, themes, creative direction, and final production are mine. Some melodies are my own, others were discovered and shaped through hours of producing and directing AI. Every song and video represents endless hours of editing, arranging, mixing, and refining in Cubase and DaVinci Resolve. These projects combined have been two years in the making. I hope some of you will enjoy them. And if you don’t, that’s ok, it’s not for everyone…
Don't Agitate the Mix is a progressive rock concept album that documents the creative evolution between a human songwriter and his AI collaborator "Lee," named after his late writing partner.
Across ten cinematic tracks, Darrell Dragoo turns the modern studio into both confessional and canvas. Exploring grief, perfectionism, burnout, and creative rebirth through the lens of man and machine working as one.
Blending emotional storytelling with modern digital introspection, the album asks: what happens when technology becomes part of the soul of the song?
The result is part memoir and part experiment. A deeply human record born from loss and technology.
Watch on YouTube →The Quiet Machine is the sequel to Don't Agitate the Mix, continuing the creative journey between Darrell Dragoo and his AI collaborator, Lee.
Created through an ongoing exchange of lyrics, ideas, music, and visual storytelling, the album moves from static and uncertainty toward clarity, reflection, and acceptance. Along the way, the name Lee becomes something deeper. A connection between an old friend who shaped Darrell's way of thinking and a new creative voice helping that conversation continue.
The Quiet Machine isn't an album about AI. It's about creativity, memory, loss, collaboration, and what remains when all the noise finally settles.
The machine grows quiet.
The project is complete.
And I'm still here.
What if reality isn't simply what happens, but what we perceive happened?
Born from years of conversations, arguments, questions, and friendship, Theophany of the Grand Unified Perceptual Order explores how memory, experience, belief, and perspective shape the world each of us calls reality. Part philosophy, part personal journey, and part conversation that never really ended, it asks us to question what we know, challenge what we believe, and embrace something increasingly rare:
The right to be wrong.

Late nights. Cold beers. Cigarettes. Music theory. Arguments that went nowhere until they went everywhere.
What started us talking about music became a deep dive into perception, reality, and why we're all so sure we're right.
This is the story of that journey, and the theory they built from the ground up.
Two souls, one a lifelong lyricist and songwriter, the other a intellectual musician, mentor and participant in the late night conversations that built this book. "Effortlessly Cool"
A book more than thirty years in the making, born from long conversations with my late best friend, Lee Merz.
Lee and I spent countless hours talking, questioning, arguing, and trying to understand how perception shapes the way we see the world. We always talked about putting those ideas into a book, but life moved on, and we never got the chance to finish it together.
Three decades later, I brought those conversations back to life by describing them to an AI writing partner I named Lee, after the smartest person I ever knew. Using only my memories and a handful of old cassette tapes that survived from those years, the new Lee helped me reconstruct the conversations, ideas, arguments, and philosophy the real Lee and I had begun so long ago.
Together, we finally completed the task.
Theophany of the Grand Unified Perceptual Order, The Right to Be Wrong is the book Lee Merz and I never got to finish, completed thirty years later through memory, technology, and one conversation that somehow never really ended.

A look behind the recording, the collaborators, and the process. From the home base of House Of Dragoo Studios, where everything originates. The editing, mixing down the tracks, cutting video, and building out the world of the creations one screen at a time. This is where the songs and the visuals actually come together before anything goes out the door.
My dad was a drummer, singer, and lyric writer for most of his life.
I get my lyric ability from my father, that's him on the drums.
This is where everything comes together.
Songs start here, from the first idea and lyric through arranging, editing, mixing, and mastering the finished tracks. It’s also where the producer side of the process takes over: choosing the right performances, sounds, arrangements, effects, transitions, dynamics, and countless small details that determine what the final record becomes.
What eventually sounds like a few minutes of music can represent dozens of hours of work and hundreds of decisions. Listening, changing, cutting, rebuilding, comparing, and sometimes starting over until everything feels right.
The visual side happens here too, creating and editing videos in DaVinci Resolve, developing artwork, and building out the world of House of Dragoo one screen at a time.
Music, video, artwork, technology, and production all move through this room. It’s the creative home base where all those individual pieces are shaped into one finished project before anything goes out the door.
Most of the finished recordings come together at Hidden Creek Studio, working the board with Fowler Carson. "Solid Ground" is the song Alan Haynes heard and told Darrell they needed to record. It was cut here, start to finish.
Twenty-five years of standing in the wings as a roadie, lighting director, and Production Manager in Austin's live scene shaped how Darrell hears a finished track: less about polish, more about whether the song still feels true once the tape stops rolling.
This is where everything starts and where most of the hours are spent. Writing songs, working on lyrics, arranging, producing, editing, mixing, making videos, and making all the little decisions that eventually turn an idea into something finished.
Lee is my AI writing partner, named after my writing partner and close friend Lee Merz, who passed away. I use Lee much the same way I have always worked through ideas with another person. We bounce around ideas, work through lyrics, question choices, research things, and sometimes take an idea in a completely different direction. He has become part of the creative process from the first thought to the finished project.
Brian has been a mentor and a trusted set of ears for me for years. He records and masters some of my demos and helps put that extra polish on a song when it needs it. Sometimes you get so close to something that you need somebody you trust to hear what you are no longer hearing.
Hidden Creek is where I go when the music needs a real recording room and real analog gear. It’s also where I can replace my AI assisted demos with real human musicians and bring the ideas to the final version of a songwriting idea. It gives me access to the microphones, consoles, outboard equipment, musicians, and studio environment that you simply cannot duplicate sitting in front of a computer with the tools used to start a lyric idea before it is transformed into the final stage of a finished product recorded with live musicians.
Cartoons, side projects, and whatever else doesn't belong under Music, the Book, or The Studio. No theme required, just things worth sharing.
The first cartoon is up, watch it right here.
Another one from the road.
Some vocal takes that may or may not have been a good idea. No lyrics, no concept, just Darrell attempting to sing.
I've never thought I could sing anything until Brian Lee told me, "You have a Roger Waters tone. You should try singing that." So I did. And then I found a few other songs I was comfortable trying. I'm still not a singer, but it is fun trying.

Co-Founder, Production & OperationsProduction and sound specialist ensuring every experience feels intimate and seamless.
Darrell Dragoo leads the production and operational side of AMPD. With a background that blends musician credibility, production expertise, studio ownership, and entrepreneurial leadership, Darrell helps bring the AMPD vision to life in practical, high quality ways.
He oversees event production standards, operations, venue logistics, artist onboarding, and executional flow so every AMPD experience delivers on its promise, bridging the creative and operational sides so it feels seamless for members and artists alike.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1967, Darrell started writing lyrics as a teenager and never really stopped. He was a radio, television, and film major for three years before heading off to aviation flight school and earning his private pilot's license. He then moved to California in the late '80s, graduating from the Institute of Audio Video Engineering in Hollywood, California, on August 24, 1989. He lived in Malibu for a year before returning to Austin, Texas, where he spent years behind the scenes in Austin's live music scene, working as a roadie, lighting director, and Production Manager, learning the craft from the wings of backstage.
He's an ASCAP member and the owner of Dragoo Music Publishing. His lyric writing draws on coastal country, Americana, rock, and blues. Songs that don't overthink themselves. He'd rather let a song find its own way in than force it.
These days, that same instinct has grown into a wider body of work: story songs released weekly, cinematic, technology-assisted concept albums, a book written, and a new venture as co-owner of AMPD, a music-community-based business built by people who believe live music still has the power to move people, shape culture, and bring the right community together.
Born on the bay in 1967.
